Located just 30 minutes away from St. Anthony and the Grenfell Historic Properties is L'Anse aux Meadows Unesco World Heritage Site. The first authenticated site in North America where the Vikings landed more than one thousand years ago. Also within five minutes of the Grenfell Historic Properties is Fishing Point Park, a common whale and iceberg watching site.
The Viking Trail is also famous for other attractions such as Gros Morne Unesco World Heritage Site, Port au Choix National Historic Site, and Red Bay National Historic Site which is located on the south coast of Labrador. The entire region is rich in culture and history.
The Great Northern Peninsula also brags of its natural beauty; from fjords, to miles and miles of coastline abundant with whales and icebergs, to rare flowers found only in this part of the world. It is common to see moose and caribou in the St. Anthony region and there are also polar bear sightings throughout the year.
To get to St. Anthony, one must take Route 430, widely known as the Viking Trail. The town of St. Anthony is the largest community on the Great Northern Peninsula and is the service centre for the region. It has a shopping centre, a hospital, many restaurants, hotels/motels, and a well developed tourism resource base. The community holds fast to its strong outport and traditional flavour. The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is best known for its hospitality. Around every turn is a friendly face ready to greet visitors from far and wide!
